"I have a slight scoliosis and twist in the spine which has caused discomfort and limits my ability in sports. I have tried many things over the years: exercise, chiropractic, Alexander, Feldenkrais, physical therapy for lower back pain, and other postural methods. Each offered small improvements but no overall changes and nothing lasting. I had started Somatics after reading about it in a magazine but felt stuck after a year. I found Ryan and Get Out Of Shape when visiting family in Maryland.
I tried a session with Ryan and felt so much progress that I continued with several sessions a week while I was in the area. Ryan taught me through hands on sessions and gave me some movements specific to my issues to help me embody and deepen my understanding of the somatic practice and my own experience.
I devote a couple of hours a day to Somatics an hour or so in the morning(the daily "Cat Stretch" plus the movements added by Ryan) and a short 15-20 minutes before bed. I also work out for 30 minutes twice a week with a program designed by a personal trainer. I find the workouts build on the Somatics. It's not easy and it is time consuming, but I wouldn't do it if it wasn't working! I have been doing this program for 3 months now since I left Maryland and Ryan and the changes are amazing! I couldn't be happier.
